Yesterday my best friend, Marcia, gave me a shock.
We were chatting about work and out of the blue Marcia said she has “never worked a day in her life.” Now, if you knew my friend Marcia you would laugh and say to her, “Don’t be ridiculous, you are always working”.
Hard Work Never Killed Anyone
Marcia is one of the most hardworking and dedicated entrepreneurs I know. In fact, her work ethic and ability to maintain and grow a successful business is the inspiration behind today’s post.
Marcia is one of those types for whom, work is play. From a young age Marcia knew she wanted to be her own boss and work for herself. Over the years, my friend applied herself, did the appropriate apprenticeships, swept the floors, made the bosses coffee, did as her mentors suggested, found her niche and slowly worked her way up the ranks of her profession to enjoy the tangible signs of success and favourable reputation she now has.
As you know, over here at The Next Goal we aim to inspire and share what we know to support and encourage you to reach “your next goal”. If you are like me and keen to grow and expand your business I am sure you will enjoy hearing the five habits my friend has cultivated over the years which helps her enjoy the success she has “without working a day in her life”.
Marcia’s 5 Secrets To Business Success
Secret #1 Choose a career so that when you reach home it feels like you have been playing all day.
As you know, it is easy to fall into any ole career and do something which is convenient, pays the bills or meets your family’s or community’s expectations. This is fine, yet the more I interact with Marcia and other entrepreneurs the more I notice just how much fun and enjoyment they get from work. Each day is a pleasure. And I’ve noticed since being self-employed first as a yoga teacher and know a blogger how much I too enjoy and look forward to playing all day at work.
Secret #2: Organise your life so there is time for work, rest and play.
As a Yoga Teacher, I fully support this. Time and time again my yoga students share how stressful and exhausted they are. The pace of life and challenge of balancing work commitments with family duties and social ties leave little time for rest and play. Many of my students come to yoga as a way of redressing the negative effects of stress in their lives. Nearly everyone is aware of the need to eat healthier, to exercise, get enough sleep and take regular breaks yet everyone struggles to live the healthy lifestyle they desire. Finding simple effective ways to work rest and play is essential for your emotional and physical well being.
Secret #3: Apply strict rules to your life and stick to them.
This is an interesting tip. One of the things I noticed about my friend is her ability to focus and complete multiple business and personal tasks each day. Marcia says when you are clear of your personal values, ethics and business goals, it is easier to set boundaries around the different segments of your day. I believe you need to build in an element of flexibility and be spontaneous with your time, especially if you have children or care for elderly parents, yet working within a tight framework helps you structure your day and make effective use of your time.
Secret #4: Always have targets- don’t just work without a goal to aim at.
This is a pertinent habit to develop for everyone and not just business owners. Knowing where you want to go, working out a plan on how you can get there makes the journey easier to navigate. Life happens to us all, yet once you have an idea of what direction you wish to travel in, it becomes easier for you to say no to people and situations which do not support your overall desire or vision.
Secret #5: Eat well and keep your body healthy.
As we say in yoga, your health is your wealth. Without good health and vitality it is difficult to cope with the complex demands on your time. Making the effort to eat well and eat foods which strengthen and nurture your body is vital to help you stay energised and cheerful. Regular exercise, good sleep habits, time alone in prayer and meditation, and scheduled time to rest and relax all contribute to you having the energy to build and grow a viable business.
Final Thoughts
This blog post was inspired by my hard working friend who said she has never worked a day in her life! Well, when I look at how dedicated and committed Marcia is I had to find out more. What do you think of her secrets to success – Eat well and keep your body healthy, have targets and work towards them, stick to the rules you set, organise your life so you have time to work, rest and play and finally chose a career which makes you laugh and you enjoy doing. Do they resonate with you?
Your Thoughts?
Looking at your life and lives of your friends and mentors, what other tips to success would you offer? I’d love to hear what works for you. Feel free to share your comments in the comment box below.

It is the starting of my business, and mostly I am spending my precious time on planning rather than doing something,, how can I remove my weakness.
Bless you Divyang, I am so glad to hear you are starting your own business. Congratulations. Planning is important and having a structure and framework will, in the long run, help to keep you focused. It does take courage to take the next step and actually start “doing” and implementing your plans. Can you share a little about your business ideas as sometimes it is useful to bounce ideas and action steps with someone not emotionally attached to your business? Is there a part of your business you feel comfortable with starting with? I remember when I first started, getting business cards printed…even although I hadnt started teaching gave me a boost to approach potential clients. So have a think about where you can start and let us know how you get on. Thanks and good luck.

It amazes me to see hardworking people do their jobs. Sometimes they seem effortless, at times they look very stressed – but there are two things constant: they work gracefully under pressure and they never give up. Having business success takes lots of hard work for sure. I think that persistent constant action towards your goals and objectives will help. It has helped me a lot.

I fully agree to #1 – having a career that you love is the key to a successful business.
I know someone who is always looking forward to Monday – she loves weekends to rest and play, but she’s always excited to begin a new “work” week. I also sometimes can’t wait to have a new day to do new stuff.
I just have to be careful and also do some breaks, because work seems sometimes so interesting that I almost work too much.

I do most of the time work and sometimes could take little rest.I feel satisfy when I work that is why I think that I cant give much time to play and rest but hopefully I will make my schedule for work, rest and play because everything should be balanced and essentail for growing the business.

Thoughtful words Holly and I definitely agree re showing appreciation for all workers. Not everyone wants the struggle, dedication and hard work that comes with being self-employed so I feel regardless of the job you do, try to find the joy and pleasure in it. Without key staff and front line staff/players in our lives, our world will be a harder place to live. The other day, I was upstairs and heard someone whistling and singing outside in the main road. Whoever it was sounded so cheerful I stopped what I was doing and peeped out. It was my local dustman, singing and whistling as he went about emptying the bins…that was an inspiration for me and I sat and watched him work–then a few days later Marcia spoke about her views on work and play and her expression reminded me of the singing dustman.
I can’t help it – you’ve no one to blame but yourself for inspiring me to post this:

memories! memories! memories! I remember me and my friends going round singing this…only you would dig this out and post!
I think #1 is something we should all strive for, where possible. But what about folks who do the very needed work in our society – the often thankless, low-paying (or not-so-low-paying, but “stuff I wouldn’t want to do if you paid me a king’s ransom”) kind of jobs? People who pump out septic tanks, for example, or teachers in inner city schools who, despite their passion for kids, must still deal with parents and administrative politics? What about those folks? If they up and left for jobs that felt like play, where would that leave us? Are they qualified for jobs that feel like play?
Believe it or not, I don’t mean this to be a cynical question aimed at those dedicated folks who do those jobs we look on in some measure of horror, most of us. What I’d suggest is giving them a little more appreciation, so that their jobs can be fun and playful, too. Or at least something they can look forward to doing, each day, with pride and the certainty that the rest of us know and are grateful for what they do for us.
