3 Reasons Why You Have Been Using the Law of Attraction the Wrong Way and How to Fix it

Does the law of attraction work? I hope you’ve never asked that question, because it would be the same thing as asking if the law of gravity works.  If you’ve ever seen someone jumping off of a cliff and falling to the ground, even if you’ve never jumped off of a cliff yourself, you are trusting that the same law of gravity would apply to your own body and, therefore, fall to the ground as well.  Don’t you?

Obviously, people don’t doubt that the law of gravity works for anyone, even if you were a bird and forgot to spread your wings.  However, some people doubt the law of attraction to be real, because they were never really able to attract what they want in life.  But is that the proof that the law of attraction doesn’t work or doesn’t exist?

Certainly not; it’s just that you’ve misunderstood the law of attraction and used it against you instead of using it for you.  Once you are able to see that, you can reverse the results of the law of attraction and start attracting what you want versus what you don’t want.

Here are three reasons why you have been using the law of attraction the wrong way and how you can fix it.

1- You have a misunderstanding  of what the law of attraction really is

When I talk about the law of attraction to someone who has never heard of it, they usually look at me with round eyes thinking that I am crazy or trying to sell them something.  They just don’t know that the law of attraction is simply one of the laws of the universe.

Then, if I explain to them what the law of attraction is and that it’s part of our universal laws, they usually still have a misunderstanding about it.  For people who hear about the law of attraction for the first time, it takes a bit of getting used to, in order to fully grasp it.

The two main misunderstandings that I have observed is that either people are not aware that they have been under the influence of the law of attraction their whole life since they were born.  Or, they are thinking that the law of attraction starts and ends on command only when they are conscious about it.  Both such beliefs are false, of course.

What is the solution to this misunderstanding?

Always remember that everything you are experiencing today, you attracted yesterday.  We are magnets of what we have and experience in our life.

I am sure that if you really take the time to take a good look at your life and think back about your state of mind and thought pattern through the years you will clearly see that you have attracted what you have today.  The good, the bad and the indifferent.   Try it, don’t lie to yourself, and you will see clearly that you have attracted the life that you have today.

2-  You are not using the law of attraction to your advantage

As I mentioned above, it’s not about if you are using the law of attraction or not, because you do, even if you don’t know that you do, but you may be thinking that you are trying to attract what you want when you are really not.

How is that possible?

People do that all the time, unless they have finally understood how this works.  Let say you want to attract a brand new car, but for now you are still driving your old car.  Every time you see your brand new car somewhere driven by someone else you feel the pangs of jealousy and you feel “bad” inside thinking, when am I ever going to get that new car?  If this rings true to you, this is why you are not attracting what you want.  On the other hand you are doing a great job at attracting what you don’t want.

Why is this so?

Because you are attracting what you focus on, either consciously or subconsciously.  If my little story above sounds familiar, you are focusing on “lack” and feeling it all through your mind and body.  You don’t have that car, you feel sad, and even jealous when you see someone else driving that car.  In other words, your vibrations are negative.  You will attract what you vibrate.

What is the solution to attract what you want versus what you don’t want?

Feel as if you already had the car.  Feel the car with all your five senses.  See it (visualize it), smell it, hear it and yes, taste the joy of having that new car.  How does it feel to drive it?  Act as if you were already in possession of your new car.  Acting as if you already had what you want mixed with the right emotions is the only way you are going to attract it.  Remember, focus!

3- You have not understood what is the time buffer

The law of attraction works with a time buffer. What this means is that what you focus on today you will attract tomorrow.  What you have focused on yesterday is what you have today.  The time buffer is actually a protection for us, so we don’t have things we attract falling on our laps instantly.  The law of attraction gives us some time to adapt and prepare more smoothly to receive what we have focused on.

If you don’t understand the time buffer you may get very impatient about what you want and, therefore, create a blockage that will only delay what you want.

To take the new car example again, if you have thought about and visualized that car over and over, and then say, where is my car?  I’ve visualized it and thought about it every day, but it’s still not here! In such case, you are attracting the “lack of the car”, not “the car”, because your subconscious mind is saying, it’s not here!

What is the solution to your impatience?

Remember the time buffer.  The law of attraction needs a time buffer to bring you what you’ve been focusing on.  Once you’ve done your attraction work, you need to relax and release.  The universe will do the rest and bring you what you want in due time.

Every time you feel impatient, replace the negative thought/feeling with another positive thought /feeling.  Catch yourself in the act like a kid in the cookie jar.  Don’t stay in the negative vibrations and move on to something better, something that feel good instead.

The law of attraction is always at work; just make sure you are on the right side of it by using it to your own advantage.

  1. its nice to see this. theres no one way to describe it, but i see wherever i look that all energy is drawn toward the highest possible potential, that theres no way to push the universe, we must let it vibrate us, we can vibrate sympathetically with it. the tides are an everyday demonstration of the principle, as is wind. we tend to think that wind blows, but really wind is drawn to the areas of low pressure, it travels to the area with potential to acheive balance. photons travel the entire universe to be absorbed by the darkness, having been reflected and refracted countless times along the way. thank you all, i have been looking for this.yep the vaccum is constantly seeking balance. it still fascinates me that every drop of rain has been drawn up from the surface, formed into a critical mass and then drawn back to the surface. it doesnt fall, it is pulled from the sky when potential is amassed such that gravity can grab hold of it again. perfect title for this blog. thanks again.

  2. I am still surprised about how many people don’t know about the law of attraction. When I start explaining about the law of attraction and quantum physics to new people they usually either already know about everything and are excited to talk about it or have no clue about what I am talking about or even sometimes try to deny it.

  3. Great post Sylviane! It’s really important to understand the time buffer. We must understand that the Universe works at its own speed. Although instant manifestation may sometimes happen, our desire will manifest in the universe’s timeframe rather than ours! It could even be that the universe knows that we are not yet ready to receive our desire.

  5. Interesting read. I’ve never actually heard of the law of attraction. I guess it all comes down to having a positive outlook on life and good things will find you.

  6. I know lots of people who spent their lives imagining being rich, praying for it, thinking about it, but didn’t materialize it. The best way to attract wealth is to provide ultimate value. Wealth doesn’t come to you if you sit there imagining it or vibrating it or whatever.

    • I agree, Lex, but I think that’s a fundamental misunderstanding people have about this “Law of Attraction” business (I hate putting trendy names to things like this – makes them all sound freaky mumbo-jumbo, when it’s really much simpler than all that). Perhaps one of the best illustrations of the way I see it is summed up in this old joke: http://www.jokesduniya.com/2240/god-will-save-me/

In other words, positive thinking leads us to see possibilities, rather than obstacles (and the converse is true, as well) – but we still have to seize our opportunities and take action. We can’t just sit around psychically “manifesting” piles of money on our kitchen counter, or something. That’s just silly. 😉

  8. i sincerely agree with point 2. i’ve painfully found out that what i did yesterday affects my today. and now hearing it all over again at this point in time that doing what you ought to do and acting as though you were what you wanted to be moved you faster than just being there waiting.

  9. Until I really learned what attraction marketing was all about, I kept failing at every online business I started, and no wonder!
Glad to see you continuing with TNG, team!

  10. Sylviane, I completely agree with, what we are experiencing today, attracted us yesterday. And I have the life I previously attracted. Your second solution is what Holly suggested me for my contest. To believe that I am the winner already, is very tough when I can see my competitors out there. OK. You explained with an example of car, but what for an online competition?

  11. I really believe that we attract what part of our world. If you are patient, determined and serious, the people who mark your life will be so also. Excellent text.

  12. Thanks for this excellent post Silviane! I was first introducion  to the law of attration through the movie "what the bleep do we know." It was a great movie and opened up my eyes in terms of looking at the way I live my life moment by moment. I know days may have their ups and downs, but I think it's important to always stay positive.

  13. You said it perfectly, Holly. That’s exactly how the law of attraction works. Decide what you want, visualize yourself having it, leaving it, experiencing it, etc… the universal forces will do the rest. Congratulations on attracting the perfect phone for you 🙂

  14. I think, if you believe that the law of attraction is just a bunch of mumbo-jumbo, you ought to at least consider it with an open mind, and maybe read http://thenextgoal.com/2011/10/increase-your-odds-winning/

I don’t think a lot of its proponents understand it, either – and I don’t believe a lot of the mumbo-jumbo surrounding the hype, but I do know what I’ve seen with my own eyes and what I’ve experienced. You could walk around believing the earth is flat, and it would still be a lumpy sphere. You could walk around believing you could fly, and gravity would still hold you against the lumpy sphere. You can walk around thinking, “I never win anything, why bother?” and you’d be right. OR…

You can learn the principles of this “law of attraction” (more properly and scientifically should be referred to, I think, as a theory – even gravity is a “theory”) and experiment, for yourself, with an open mind. You literally have NOTHING to lose.

Funny story: When I entered the “Surviving the Blog” contest, one thing I really wanted, at the time, and planned to use a good chunk of my winnings – if I won – to buy, was a new cell phone. I couldn’t really justify the expense, still have just over a year to go on my contract, but my cell phone kept shutting down, wouldn’t make calls on demand, and was generally being a butt. So the one I’d picked out was a little pricey, but nice… and I wrote that down as the #1 thing I planned to do with my winnings. I pictured myself using it (not very specifically – I should add this, right here and now – I just pictured myself using a newer, faster, reliable phone that had certain basic features, like a camera and good integration with social media – stuff I used the phone for often).

Even before I won the contest, guess what? I was told by Klout.com that I was eligible for a “Klout Perk” – a brand new Windows 7.5 cell phone! Free. I love it, too. I’ve been using it since – well, I think it arrived in November? And it reliably makes calls, has a camera, has FANTASTIC integration with all my social media sites – pretty much does everything I need and really WANT a cell phone to do. It’s a Samsung Focus i917, if you’re curious – running Windows “Mango.” Not quite as many free apps as Android, but few ads (only on SOME of the free apps).

AND I won the contest. 😉
